Summary & Review

I actually read this book for the first time last year when I initially received the ARC and I loved it. As soon as the author notified me that the second book ARCs were available, I decided to re-read this one first so I could take notes and have the details fresh in my mind. And I’m happy to report that I loved this book just as much the second time!

This story follows Sorine (AKA Khaos) and Zane (AKA Hawkeye), both survivors of traumatic and difficult backgrounds, who work to ensure that others aren’t taken advantage of and hurt in the ways they were.

Sorine survived horrific situations in her childhood and was rescued by Oliver, her now-handler and father-like figure. Together, they work to disrupt and end the plans of those who seek to cause harm, whether by trafficking children or selling dangerous weapons.

Zane survived his abusive and controlling father, using the military as a means of escape. He has since started his own security business, Storm Security, that offers work similar to what Khaos and Oliver do.

They are rivals, orbiting around each other. Between the dangerous missions and the personal interests, there becomes a lot of tension between the two. There’s also wonderful banter. The way Karin Winter writes is beautiful and at times tragic, but she also does a fantastic job of including humor throughout the story. I do love some good banter.

I gave this book 5 stars both times I read it. I absolutely love it. It’s intense, action-packed, and fun. There’s great chemistry between the main characters and an interesting story plot. I stayed engaged the entire time and couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next.

I gave this one 2 chili peppers, but it’s not really spicy. There are several kissing scenes and 2 intimate scenes. Based on our rating scale, this would be 2 peppers. But again, if you’re wary of spice, don’t let those peppers scare you off. It’s such a small part of the story at this point. It just helps add to the characters’ chemistry and relationship.

This book does end on a cliffhanger, but it’s so worth it and now book 2 is out, so it’s totally fine. Although that one also ends on a cliffhanger. But still, this one is worth a read even knowing you’ll be left wanting more šŸ˜….
