Shayna’s Review
Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 & 🌶️/5
This book is odd. It’s the first book I’ve read by Alice Feeney and has very mixed reviews from readers, so I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when starting it.
I actually really enjoyed the story. This is a thriller, following Grady and his success and struggles as an author whose wife, Abby, went missing a year ago. While on the phone with her, she gets out of the car to check on a woman she sees lying in the road and then she’s just gone. Grady had just received good news about his book becoming a New York Times bestseller when this event occurred, making it the best and worst day of his life.
After a year with no closure, Grady has been unable to move forward. He’s lost his house, has been unable to write, and deals with insomnia and grief constantly. He doesn’t know how to move forward.
His agent, Kitty 🐱, who was also Abby’s godmother, offers a solution. She has a cabin in Scotland that’s remote and quiet. She tells Grady to go set up shop there for 3 months to rest, heal, and write his next book. Grady agrees.
Now this is where things start getting weird. Odd things happen while on the island and Grady begins seeing and hearing things. He can’t tell what’s real and what’s caused by his all-consuming grief. There are a lot of twists and unexpected plot points that many readers hated, but I actually found enjoyable.
The ending was unexpected for me and at first, I wasn’t sure I liked it. But the more I’ve thought about it and the story as a whole, I’ve come to realize that I actually really love how it ended.
I gave this story 1 chili pepper, but it’s not a spicy book. There were brief mentions of intimate situations in the past, but nothing happening between main characters in the present. Based on our rating scale, this was somewhere between 1 and 2 chili peppers because there was TECHNICALLY more than just a kiss and a fade-to-black scene, but it wasn’t detailed and wasn’t happening in present scenes. I ultimately settled on 1 pepper.
I thought this was a fun read and I look forward to trying out some of Alice Feeney’s other works! 🖤
Ronni’s Review
Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
So Shayna took most of the thunder there, because it has taken me 5-7 business weeks to log in and work on this, but I think she covered the gist of the story. This is definitely a slow burn. I swear I had read an Alice Feeney previously, but looking through her list of books, I haven’t read any except this one. She gets mixed reviews on all of her work that I’ve seen, but it’s usually overall positive. This lives up to that. While there were some points where things were dulling down, she has a way of picking it back up for you.
There is a twist in this book I did NOT see coming! It’s been a couple of weeks since I finished this, and I still can’t believe that …… well, you’ll just have to read it and find out. Not once did I see it coming, and I was definitely left with my mouth hanging open! It was weird, it was different, and it wasn’t like any other plot line I’d read before, but it was good. That damn red coat….
