Summary & Review

Willa Renfri Greene had a heck of a childhood. A friend who lived under her bed and taught her how to read, parents who didn’t believe her and thought she was weird, a predator as a teacher, and oh, did I mention? She was accused of the deaths of six of her friends. To say she’s had it rough is an understatement. Naturally, she gets out of town as soon as she can and tries to put her past behind her.

When one of the only people she truly had on her side growing up passes away, she returns to her hometown for the funeral. Her plans are go to the funeral, stay out of the woods, and go home. We know these plans do not always turn out the way we expect.

This story was truly a spooky one. Shadow people, a friend living under the bed, a forest who knows she’s back. It’s a thriller and a supernatural telling and just a masterpiece all in one. I was reading this on a sunny afternoon, but Zinnikas’ descriptions were so vivid that I felt as though I was in a dark forest, fighting for my life! If you need a fantastic spooky season read, this is it!

I hear this is her debut novel and I truly hope we see more from her because she’s fabulous! If you like Riley Sager and Jason Rekulak, you’ll love Emily Zinnikas even more 🖤💜
