Project Hail Mary is a dual-timeline type of story that focuses on Ryland Grace and how he goes from a teacher to the only hope mankind has to save Earth. Crazy, right?
So basically, Ryland is a doctor-turned-teacher after he wrote a paper that insulted other scientists. He teaches young learners about science and does a good job of keeping them interested. Little did he know that a paper he wrote years ago would come back to potentially bite him in the butt.
There are “dots” found that are feeding off the sun and eventually there will be enough heat lost that the Earth and all its inhabits will suffer significant issues and then die off.
The paper Ryland had written was about lifeforms potentially not requiring the same elements to survive as the lifeforms on Earth. This was read by Stratt, the person in charge of the entire project, and that’s how she decided to have Ryland join the project. She wanted him to see if he could figure out what those “dots” needed to survive so they would know how to destroy them.
Long story short, things get wild and there’s a space mission to try and save Earth and all its people.

Summary & Review
Okay, so the book is interesting. It’s not a quick story, by any means. It’s very slow, but very intense as well. The author does a fantastic job of diving into the science behind everything without making it feel too overwhelming.
We quickly learn about Ryland Grace, both his present and his past. We get glimpses of what happened in the past to lead to his current situation, where he was all alone and trying to solve Earth’s biggest issue.
Truly, the writing was wonderful. And the narration by Ray Porter was phenomenal. Ryland was brought to life and Rocky, the interesting and unique alien rock monster, was also given such a unique voice (so to speak). He didn’t talk, but Ray was still able to still give his character such life and uniqueness that it was truly impressive.
Also, I loved Rocky. The more we learned, the more I felt for his character. The writing was beautifully done and I was so excited to explore what led Ryland to that chaotic moment when he woke up.
I will say that I watched the movie and it’s VASTLY different and seemed to leave out so many important details. It was kind of a letdown, to be totally honest. But the book? I would definitely recommend that.
