Summary & Review
This epic ending to the first part of this series is intense. At the end of Golden Son, we know Darrow was captured. This book starts with that and shows the insane situation Darrow had been dealing with for months. I mean, it’s truly rough and only a twisted mind (like the Jackal) would be able to come up with such a torment.
In this book, Darrow escapes capture and starts back up on his campaign against the Society. We get to see him as he recovers from his capture, finds his current place amongst the ranks, and cleverly starts to build up the resistance and claim much needed resources. Darrow is the ever-brilliant leader who is both a lowborn Red and a successfully strategic Gold. Truths come to light and we get all kinds of twists and betrayals and reunions. As with the previous two books, Pierce Brown throws all the emotions at us.
I always leave these stories mentally exhausted, but in a good way. There’s so much that happens and so many tense and stressful situations that seem completely hopeless, that I always think, “Well, this isn’t going to work out. I just know I’m going to lose a character I like during this”. And that definitely happens. I nearly rioted after one loss (not really, but I was very upset). But a writer who can make you feel that way about a fictional character dealing with fictional issues? Phenomenal.
I’ll be taking a small break before I start the next portion of this series, Iron Gold, and I can’t wait for whatever Pierce Brown has in store with that one! 🖤
