Summary

In this book, Elise continues to investigate the kings and any involvement she can find that relates to Gareth’s death. She starts to feel more than just hate and suspicion towards the kings, but fights those feelings to ensure she’s always only ever focused on her revenge for Gareth.

And with each new chapter of Gareth’s POV, we learn how each king may have potentially been involved in his death, leading to the ultimate tension between characters.

Review

The boys are all starting to get really possessive over Elise and I’m here for it. They’re all basically competing for her affection, while she gives the bare minimum and continues to try and figure out what happened to her brother.

I love how independent and unique Elise is as a FMC, for real. I love her strength and confidence. These boys don’t stand a chance.

The tension reaches an all-time high in this book with Ryder and Dante, both fighting and ultimately coming to an extremely stupid decision that they’ll likely regret.

And the investigation continues to lead us to some interesting facts… (old details in black; new ones in blue)

Leon – Gareth’s roommate & friend

  • had a super rare and expensive white jasper stone that Gareth stole and pawned

Ryder –

  • had gotten into it with Gareth after asking if he’d chosen a gang (Lunar brotherhood or Oscura clan) & Gareth said no, he wouldn’t be joining either – took Gareth’s room
  • later Gareth asked to do odd jobs to earn some money. Ryder initially said no, but eventually agreed
  • Ryder makes it clear he knows what’s in Killblaze, so Elise assume he’s the one who creates or sells it – he’s a basilisk and they’re immune to all poisons, but can detect all ingredients in one. He tries it to see what it’s made of

Dante –

  • asked Dante to do odd jobs to earn some money. Agreed
  • Dante had cut his cousin Lorenzo off from the pack until he cleaned up, getting off Killblaze. He had to stick with his decision, but wanted Gareth to be Lorenzo’s friend, helping him break the habit

Gabriel –

  • had gotten into it with Gareth when he accidentally bumped into Gabriel in the hall, knocking his Atlas out of his hands and seeing the large money donations. After Gabriel traps him with his water and earth magic, Gareth decides he’ll learn what Gabriel is hiding so he can bribe him for the money he needs to save Elise
  • Gareth had found a hidden file of Gabriel’s, which included 7 different identities. Used this to blackmail money out of him
  • Elise finds Gareth’s old burner phone and learns about the blackmail; texts Gabriel from the phone

Favorite Quotes

  • I swear her whole damn body tasted like cherries and ecstasy. Fucking checstasy
  • “I just don’t understand why you fought so hard against what we had but you have no problem jumping into bed with that fucking hakuna matasshole,” Ryder snapped as I dropped into my seat.
I arched an eyebrow at him. “Shit, Ryder, you really do love The Lion King, don’t you?” I snorted.
“Fuck off. And answer my question.”
“I didn’t hear a question amongst your Disney based insults,” I replied.
  • But the airy feeling in my stomach wasn’t something I had a label for. If I had to name it though, I’d call it cloudfuckery.
  • “I’m tall,” Leon said indignantly, stalking closer to me. “I’m six, two. Being taller than that is unnecessary.”
