Summary & Review
My mother recently got into Chris Carter books and owns the first 10 of his Robert Hunter series. After she’s raved about them for a while, I decided it was time to give it a try. And I’m so glad I did!
I’ve said it before in other reviews, but often times 3rd person POV is more difficult for me to get into. It definitely depends on the way the author writes and the plot of the story itself, but I typically prefer 1st person POV and find it easier to get sucked into. But despite being written in 3rd person and revolving around so many characters, I had absolutely no trouble being pulled into this story.
The book primarily follows Robert Hunter, a super smart homicide detective, and his hunt for the Crucifix Killer, who everyone believes has been caught and imprisoned already. While Robert had been skeptical, the murders did stop. For a time.
Now the Crucifix Killer is at it again and this time, the victims are getting a little closer to home. This isn’t a spoiler, since it was literally the first chapter, but Robert’s new partner is one of the victims that we know will be taken, though we don’t have all the details surrounding that until later on in the book. It’s interesting to see how we get to that point and why his partner was chosen.
This story has so many characters and moving parts that come together so well in the end. It’s honestly so well done, and I didn’t realize that many big plot points were actually misleading me at times. I loved seeing how everything unfolded and how the characters and victims were connected.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed this first book and I will definitely look forward to reading more of Chris Carter’s work! Thankfully, my mom has 9 more already available for me. š
Oh, and I gave this 1 chili pepper but there’s not really any spice in the book. There’s some kissing and fade-to-black/ implied situations, but nothing wild. So don’t let that deter you if you’re a mystery/thriller lover, but not a lover of romance.
