Shayna’s Review

Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/ 5

I think I loved this book more than The Sorrowstones, up until the end. I really loved the creepy vibes this book gave and that first chapter with Carrot the Parrot was absolute perfection. It was spooky and descriptive and just set up the story so well. I was drawn in immediately and could not wait to continue on.

I really enjoy the way Felix Blackwell writes and the way his warped mind works. I also love how he can infuse humor into his stories, while being able to keep them feeling creepy afterward. That’s a real talent. My favorite humorous line from Stolen Tongues:

Anyway, this story was phenomenal up until the ending. Granted, many people love the ending, but I prefer closure and answers. I feel like hardly any of the main plot points were answered and certain aspects wrapped up so quickly, I felt like I must have skipped a few pages or something.

I did learn, however, that Blackwell wrote a prequel to this story, The Church Beneath the Roots, which I plan to read eventually. I sincerely hope it’ll give a little more insight to some of the plot points in this story!

Ronni’s Review

Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Carrot the Parrot is the real star of the show, just saying. I’m glad he was not hurt in the making of this story, I was very worried about him!
Blackwell knows how to write some creepy shit. Someone should probably check on him every once in a while, just to make sure he’s okay.

Stolen Tongues was one of those stories that, much like a horror movie, had me screaming at the characters the whole time to do something! The biggest issue I had throughout this story was with the mom withholding information from Felix that she knew might help her daughter. Well that and the secret (I won’t say what so I don’t spoil it) that is holding the daughter “captive” just doesn’t seem like something that would have had that big of a pull on her for reasons that make sense when you read the book.

I love that this started as a Reddit story and developed into a full-fledged writing career for Blackwell. Right after starting this book, I saw a post about his journey from that Reddit thread to becoming a published author and it just made me like him more.

If you are into cryptids, secrets, lore, and suspense, you will enjoy this. Blackwell has a natural talent for painting a creepy picture in your mind and keeping you looking over your shoulder.
