Summary & Review
The plot was interesting and I do love a good academic setting. And magic. I liked Violet’s character a lot because she has a quiet resilience, despite the hand she’s been dealt in life. She faced traumas and has been pushed aside and deemed nearly worthless by her family and peers, but she keeps pushing forward. Granted, she doesn’t have many other options, but I can still appreciate the way she just falls into what she likes (botany) and continues to try developing the skills she does have, despite not having much magic.
I do feel like there were a few plot points that didn’t make a ton of sense to me, but maybe things will be further explained in future books and it’ll all come together nicely! I will definitely be looking for book 2 because I need to see what happens next.
I will say that I didn’t particularly love the dynamic between Roman and Violet, or Aster and Violet. Primarily because it was really unclear. They care about her (differently, but still), but treat her like crap, but they are aware that they do and they’re aware it isn’t her fault, but they don’t stop, nor do they stop their friends from treating her poorly?
I’m hoping there’s a lot more to it than just the fact that she was found to have little magic. Like, maybe something else happened that we don’t know about yet and both Roman and Aster were threatened, causing them to push Violet away for her safety or something. That would make more sense to me. But if they loved her and cared about her and just started being hateful because she didn’t have strong magic, I can’t really say I understand. I just need more, I guess.
Overall, a great book, though! I can’t wait for the next one to come out!
